SAM ABERCROMBY:

SEBASTIANISM ?

SEBASTIANISM is a cultural and national mythology based on the belief that Sebastian I King of Portugal , who disappeared in north Africa in the battle of Alcácer-Quibir will one day reappear on a foggy morning to save the nation.

Most of the paintings are part of a large collection of around 150 inspired “adventures”, centered around the life and times of Sebastian I El Rei de Portugal (born: 1554 - ?)

They are not historical reanactments but poetic and lyrical inventions based on known and imagined scenarios. The collection is called - SEBASTIANISMO REVISITADO which in english means SEBASTIANISM REVISITED.
